Tong Xue

PhD Candidate

Area of interest: Medieval Chinese art, with a focus on funerary art in the 5th-7th centuries Southern tombs.

Tong Xue earned her BS in Landscape Architecture with honors and a minor in Art History, followed by her MA from the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. Her M.A. thesis, titled “Design and Construction: Southern Dynasties' Molded Pictorial Brick Tombs,” examined the production of bricks and the construction techniques used for a group of tombs in the Jiankang region, offering a multifaceted and syncretic interpretation from a technical standpoint. Currently, she is exploring the interregional connectivity of brickmaking practices, religious interactions, funerary rituals, and the visual effects of the Six Dynasties' tombs. Additionally, she holds a keen interest in cross-cultural exchanges during the middle period.
